Baldeodas Santlal Mahila Mahavidyalaya was established in 1982 by philanthrophists Shri Sant Lal Agarwal and his wife, Smt. Mana Devi as a residential undergraduate college for women in Ghatshila, East Singhbhum, to address educational disparities and promote empowerment within this community. It is managed by Baldev Das Sant Lal Mahila Mahavidyalaya Siksha Samiti [ Reg. No. - 1033/07, registered under the Society Registration Act, 1860 ] . It is a permanently affiliated unit of the Kolhan University.

In the East Singhbhum district, the female literacy rate is 66.81%, significantly lower than the male literacy rate of 83.75%.[census2011.co.in] A study in the nearby villages revealed that 50% of tribal women were illiterate, with only 3% pursuing higher education beyond matriculation.[researchgate.net]

Education serves as a powerful catalyst for empowerment, enabling women to participate actively in economic, social, and political spheres. The college motto "Sa Vidya Ya Vimuktaye" is a Sanskrit phrase that translates to "That is true knowledge which liberates." It emphasizes the idea that education is not merely about acquiring information but about gaining wisdom that leads to personal growth, enlightenment, and freedom from ignorance. This motto reflects the belief that true learning empowers individuals to think critically, make informed decisions, and contribute meaningfully to society. It aligns with the broader purpose of education—to cultivate not just intellect but also character, ethical values, and a sense of responsibility toward oneself and others.
